Fish traders, smokers & artisanal processors
As a fish trader, smoker or artisanal processor, you are the first link that preserves, processes and moves fish towards the markets.
Definition in the architecture : First-stage processing (smoking, salting-drying) ahead of industrial processing
What you do
- Buy fresh fish from fishers and fish farmers at landing or harvest
- Smoke, dry or salt fish to preserve it and add value
- Pack, ice and transport fresh or processed fish to markets
- Supply urban markets, wholesalers and cross-border traders
- Operate smoking kilns, drying racks and small cold-storage equipment
You link the catch to the market. You receive fresh fish from sea-going and inland fishers and from fish farmers, together with ice, fuelwood or improved kilns from suppliers. You deliver fresh, smoked or dried fish to urban markets, wholesalers, restaurants and sometimes industrial units. You secure the fisher’s income by buying quickly, and you unlock for downstream actors a form of preservation that reaches the cities of the interior and neighbouring markets.
Where are you found? At landing sites along the coast, in Douala, Kribi and Limbe, on the banks of rivers and reservoirs in the North, Far North and East, and around fish farms in the Centre and West. The major markets of Douala, Yaoundé, Bafoussam, Garoua and Maroua concentrate wholesale trade in smoked and dried fish.
Why your business matters in Cameroon and Central Africa
Fish trading and artisanal processing are essential in a country where the cold chain is still incomplete. Smoking and drying keep fish for several weeks and supply markets far from the coast and inland waters. These trades, largely carried out by women, generate substantial income in landing areas and on urban markets. Improved kilns, hygiene and packaging cut losses, protect consumer health and open access to formal markets and to trade within CEMAC and with neighbouring Nigeria, where Cameroonian smoked fish is sought after.
The headings that project promoters, partners and institutions look at first. Fill them in with your real orders of magnitude: this is what makes your profile usable.
- Adopt improved kilns and hygiene practices that meet the expectations of formal markets
- Access ice, packaging and small cold-chain equipment at an affordable cost
- Secure fresh fish supply from identified fishers and fish farmers throughout the year
- Structure outlets towards wholesalers, restaurants and cross-border markets
- Access microcredit to finance fish purchases and processing equipment
