Inland fishers
As a fisher on Cameroon’s rivers, lakes and reservoirs, you supply freshwater fish to rural markets and to the cities of the interior.
Definition in the architecture : Freshwater catch (rivers, lakes, reservoirs)
What you do
- Catch freshwater fish in rivers, lakes, floodplains and reservoirs
- Set and haul nets, traps, lines and other gear suited to each water body
- Preserve catches by icing, smoking or immediate drying according to available means
- Sell fresh or processed fish to fish traders, local markets and collectors
- Take part in community management of fishing grounds and respect closed seasons
You are an upstream producer in the inland fisheries value chain. You receive gear, ice and small equipment from local suppliers, together with guidance from the relevant services and fishers’ groups. You deliver your catches to fish traders, artisanal smokers and dryers, rural markets and the collectors who serve the cities. You secure an affordable source of protein in areas far from the coast, and you unlock for downstream actors a raw material whose value and outlets depend on rapid preservation.
Where are you found?Along the major rivers and inland water bodies: floodplains and lakes of the Far North and North, hydroelectric reservoirs of the Centre, Adamawa and East, rivers and streams of the forest zone of the South and East. Catches reach the markets of Maroua, Garoua, Ngaoundéré, Bertoua and Yaoundé.
Why your business matters in Cameroon and Central Africa
Inland fishing feeds the populations of valleys, floodplains and lake areas, often far from import circuits. It provides income to rural households with few alternatives and supplies an artisanal processing sector that is very present on the markets of the North, Far North and East. Its sustainability depends on concerted management of water bodies, respect for breeding seasons and the fight against destructive gear. Better organised and better equipped to preserve their catches, inland fishers can reach Cameroon’s urban markets and cross-border trade with neighbouring CEMAC countries.
The headings that project promoters, partners and institutions look at first. Fill them in with your real orders of magnitude: this is what makes your profile usable.
- Cut post-catch losses through ice, improved smoking kilns and clean drying facilities
- Access compliant, durable fishing gear at an affordable cost through group purchasing
- Secure regular outlets with fish traders and the collectors who supply urban markets
- Take part in concerted management of water bodies to protect the resource over time
- Join forces to share equipment, transport and marketing with other fishers
