EUDR: what the European regulation changes for Cameroonian cocoa and coffee

The European Union regulation on “zero-deforestation” products — the EUDR — makes cocoa and coffee entry to the European market conditional on a requirement simple to state and heavy to hold: proving the product does not come from deforested land, plot by plot.

For Cameroonian value chains, for which Europe is a major outlet, this is not one more formality: it changes the nature of the commercial relationship. The European buyer must exercise “due diligence” — and passes it down the whole supply chain, to the planter.

Geolocation of production plots, documents linking each lot to its plots, and the ability to produce that proof on demand. Without them, the lot does not load — whatever its quality.

The good news: these requirements reward those who get organised. A cooperative that geolocates its plots, keeps its collection registers and traces its lots turns a constraint into a durable commercial advantage.
